Is South Africa Safe…Part 2

In the previous post, we started the discussion on how safe South Africa is for tourists. This post would continue with how safe South Africa is for tourists.

How Safe Is South Africa For Pregnant Tourists?

A major concern for pregnant tourists visiting South Africa is malaria. Pregnant tourists may experience severe malaria but may be limited from taking certain medications to prevent malaria. So, if you are pregnant, you may avoid travelling to any South Africa, otherwise, ensure that you talk to your medical practitioner about available medical options.

It is also very important for you to get a travel insurance policy. Though this policy would only cover you if you are not travelling against your doctor’s advice and within the limit for maximum weeks of pregnancy, which is between 18 to 36 weeks.

Do You Need To Be Vaccinated Before Visiting South Africa?

Yes! It is a very good idea to get vaccinated before visiting South Africa. Consult with your medical practitioner about your travel vaccinations and ensure that your routine vaccinations are up to date before you travel to South Africa. Otherwise, you may be at risk of diseases like malaria, typhoid, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis A.

Note that though malaria is not found in all parts of South Africa, it is prevalent in some parts like the Panorama Route and Kruger National Park. Also, note that your travel insurance policy may not cover you if you were not given the recommended vaccinations and you fall ill in South Africa.

How Safe Is It To Drive In South Africa?

Driving in South Africa is generally safe. Notwithstanding, the following advice will help your driving to run smoothly.

  • Carjacking is predominant in some parts of Johannesburg. It not surprising to find signposts in these areas with warnings not to stop at a red light. It is advisable that you drive with your windows and doors locked, cautiously approach intersections, and avoid night driving as much as possible.
  • The likelihood of getting involved in a fatal accident in South Africa is about 5 times higher than in Australia. And most of the accidents occur at night and mostly as a result of drink-driving. So, try as much as possible not to drive when it’s dark.
  • It’s very important for you to get car rental excess insurance. This will help you to avoid due expenses should in case you damage the car or get involved in an auto accident.

How Safe Is Transportation In South Africa?

Most driving apps like Taxify and Uber use meters and offer affordable transportation around major South African cities. However, not all local taxis use meters, therefore, ensure that you negotiate the price before you board to avoid being ripped off. If you are going to the north of the country, Johannesburg’s Gautrain is a safe option. Otherwise, use Uber, which is not only very affordable but also the safest option to get around the city.

For first-time visitors to South Africa, try as much as possible to avoid local public transport, they can be complicated, though Cape Town is an exception. Toyota minibuses must be used with caution because accidents are common and they have no space for luggage.

If you need a quicker means of getting around the cities and you are not on a strict budget, you can fly using any of the local airlines, such as Safair, British Airways, Kulula, and Mango.
